Pride Month Branding

Something that is really random, but that my friends and I were discussing recently was the hypocrisy and interesting branding and products during pride month, especially from companies that otherwise do not provide any support to the queer community. A prime example of this that comes to mind is Target. Target is infamous for their eccentric and interesting pride collections, yet they have disbanded their DEI initiatives that could actually provide support for those in the queer community. Many companies are using the identity of being LGBTQ for their benefit, while actively contributing to the struggles that many members of the community face. This may not seem like a big deal to some people, but it truly just is a representation of how large companies and organizations use this identity to their benefit rather than actually respecting people and helping to solve some of the issues that they are facing.
Thank you for pointing out the irony in this! As a member of the LGBTQ community, a part of me always dreads when June comes around and brands start to roll out all of the rainbow merch they have hidden in backstock. While I appreciate and understand the importance of representation, I can't help but think all of it is extremely performative. Sadly, it affects a lot of minority groups too. I wish companies/brands would take representation and activism more seriously instead of using it as a cash grab.
ReplyDeleteBrands like this to me are just very performative. They are clearly putting up displays so they seem to be inclusive and appreciative to all, yet behind closed doors there are different policies that are actively working against this.
