Will the Pitt's downfall be writing out women of color?
THERE'S no doubt that HBO's medical drama, The Pitt has found success with more of the recent months due to the release of season 2 during the beginning of the year. The Pitt additionally has managed to grow its fanbase across social media platforms, with fans being able to express any favoritisms of any of the characters. One of the favorites that has emerged from season one and two is doctor Samira Mohan, portrayed by South Indian actress, Supriya Ganesh. Throughout season one, it's evident that Mohan's character is a heavy advocate for the women of color patients and ensures that all her patients are taken care of, no matter if she's a bit on the slower end with treating her patients. She's also usually verbally attacked by Dr. Robby for her rather slow attending skills and not being able to leave her personal issues outside the medical sphere.
A couple weeks before The Pitt's last episode aired, it was revealed that Ganesh would not be back to reprise their character for season 3. Many have argued that the character of Mohan is finished writing wise and the character is moving on, while other fans have noted a similar pattern with the return of show coming back. Characters Heather Collins, senior emergency medicine resident and Kiara Alfaro, social worker for the hospital have no returned for the show for I'd argue unexplained reasons. Yes, there's the argument that Collins's arc was finished by the concluding episodes of season one, but then again, considering that she was a favorite among the fans and she also served as a positive reinforcement of black female characters and black doctors in the medical field, it's led many people to really examine why these women of color of are being written out person season.
As Ganesh's character won't be returning for the third season, some people have found the positive as Parker Ellis portrayed by Ayesha Harris, a doctor during the night shift will be moving up to a reoccurring character instead of her supporting role she's been playing since season one. Fans are finding the positive because Ellis is a black lesbian, and while we can celebrate this win, it's not wrong to question the reason why Mohan won't be returning.
Ganesh has described by her coworkers as a positive individual, getting along with everyone and treating everyone around her with respect. On her social medias like X and Instagram, she remains vocal with her activism and even stood up for herself and other Indian actresses after a racist comment was made online.
Fans are suspecting that something most likely went down behind the scenes. Others are worried about the future of women of color as the show progresses and are soon starting to film for season 3. It's sad to see a show that's been named pivotal for its racial diversity across the medical field begin to turn away its actresses of color. Yes, it could be that their storylines and arcs of done, but why are so many of their stories especially finished so early? Where's the priority for women of color? Where's their protection from these white writers who continue to push their own narratives to the front?
It's true and realistic that things happen to the doctors within the medical field that have them change their minds or even question if they're in the correct profession, but why do women of color have to be at the brunt of this? Noah Wyle who stars, writes, and semi-directs the show has even teased that even more characters may not be returning as season 3 airs or even in the future of the show which leaves people worried if women of color will be still be targeted.
