WGST Event Reflection: Rhinoceros
This weekend, I was able to see CCU's production of the play, Rhinoceros, written by Eugène Ionesco. I absolutely loved the message, the comedy, and the talent that was presented on stage! It is a very important show, emphasizing themes of conformity and individuality, and mass ideology. While the writing is fantastic, I took a moment to think about the show from a WGST perspective and consider how the portrayal of the female characters might reflect the time it was written.
The female characters in the play are not fully developed characters, acting more as symbols or catalysts for the male protagonist. Specifically, the main love interest Daisy, who represents calmness and empathy (which are stereotypically associated with femininity). Daisy is less of an individual character and more of an emotional test for the leading man. After researching more about the play, I found that it was written in 1959, which gives some context to the shallow portrayal of the female perspective in this play.
All in all, I thought the show was fabulous. Kudos to the cast and crew of Rhinoceros! I can't wait to see next years productions!
I am so jealous you got to go! It sounds like you had a good time and it was a fantastic play!
