performing independence
Something I was thinking earlier is the idea of “performing independence.” Women today are expected to be independent and strong which sounds like a good thing, but it can also feel like pressure. It’s not just about actually being independent; it’s about looking independent in the “right” way. At the same time, women are still judged if they don’t fit more traditional roles, like being caring or focused on relationships. So it ends up feeling like you have to balance both, which can be confusing. For example, if a woman is really focused on her career, people might say she’s too independent or intimidating. But if she cares more about relationships, she might be seen as dependent. Either way, there’s always some kind of judgment. It just shows that even when things seem to improve, women are still expected to fit into certain expectations.
I totally agree with this! There is so much pressure to be independent, yet if you do too much on your own, it may seem like you are TOO independent, which many people criticize as well. It's so difficult to find a balance without some sort of judgement.
