Parasocial Relationships

While it is definitely not a bad thing to be a fan of celebrities, it can get to a point of intensity where it lands in a parasocial relationship. A parasocial relationship is where the fan gets psychologically attached to a celebrity or fictional character, when that celebrity has no idea they exist. This can be extremely harmful to people because they are dedicating their time, energy, and intense emotions into somebody that has no idea they exist. People will have intense beliefs and in some severe cases even alter their motives due to these celebrities. They may verbally attack others in defense of that celebrity, or spend unhealthy amounts of time obsessing over them.

These relationships can be shown in many different ways, but I believe the most common is through social media. These can be people with fan accounts, or even just their normal accounts who obsess over their socials. If a celebrity likes their comment, they will take it personally and think the celebrity is singling them out. In some severe cases, parasocial relationships can end badly, such as stalking. While this may be only severe cases, it most definitely happens.
