JK Rowling - Harry Potter Rant
For this week’s discussion topic, I will be talking about JK Rowling and their infamous series titled Harry Potter, as well as the new adaptation that is filming as I type this or at least in post production. I have personally never seen any of the Harry Potter movies nor have I read any of the books so any bias that may come up is outside of my personal knowledge. I have seen on the news recently, the last year or so, that JK has been donating upwards of millions of dollars to fund anti-transgender legislation in the United Kingdom and has been successful at doing so. A lot of her multi-million dollar funding has pushed through legislation practically banning the concept of transgender women in the United Kingdom. Villianifying them. Stripping them of resources. Portraying them as a public nuisance. Absolutely disgusting. Even worse, people who are part of the LGBTQIA+ community see Harry Potter, see the new adaptation coming soon, share posts online about their favorite Harry Potter moments, all with the knowledge of JK’s behavior and still decide to support. Excusing it as maybe JK already made her money, the money donated is gone, the legislation is already happening, their money spent is far from her pockets, etc. Though, just the sharing and support, while knowing of the anti-transgender information, means one is complicit. -million dollar funding has pushed through legislation practically banning the concept of transgender women in the United Kingdom. What are your thoughts?

I didn't even know she was funding anti-transgender policies and organizations, and I think many other people who know the author may also not be totally informed of the matter. This has defitnely changed my perception of the woman and influenced whether or not I'll indulge in the newcoming trilogies.
ReplyDeleteAs far as I am concerned, Rowling is a despicable human being. A woman who basically went from rags to riches and who was embraced in the queer community, turned her back on them and many others. Her refusal to refer to trans women as women is disgusting. She literally got ticked off when a reference was made that 'people' get pregnant. Her tirade was only women can get pregnant. Total refusal to acknowledge that everyone does not identify with their genitals. Her anti-LGBTQ+ position has turned off many of her supporters. Thankfully, I never read or watched any of her books or films.
