WGST event blog

I went to the event called “What Were You Wearing?” exhibit. It was in the LJSU Rotunda. It was an all-day thing. There were multiple outfits hung up around the windows in LJSU, and next to each one was a snippet of their feelings, what happened during that time, and how they overcame it today. For example, one specific window caught my attention because it is so shocking and scary to think that something so terrible could happen to someone while wearing an ordinary outfit that most people wear. It made me look at this differently because people tend to blame the victims of the whole thing based on what they were wearing. So it did not really sit right with me when I saw this, and all it was was baggy jeans along with a big t-shirt. A piece of the writing next to the clothing, the individual said something along the lines of, “They don’t get to take my voice, my favorite color, or my ability to say no and mean it. These are mine.” This excerpt from that really hit me hard because in the moment, this individual was most likely nervous, and now they have the opportunity to speak out about it and use their voice to explain how they feel in the end. This quote also seemed very powerful to me because it can be taken as how this individual is very strong after this had happened.

  1. This is so powerful and I think having the individual write something next to their outfit is a really important touch. These clothes belong to real people with real stories. Everyone's story is unique and these victim's voices should be heard.

  2. I got the opportunity to help set this exhibit up and I'm so glad you stopped by to see it! The fact that you actually resonated with it also makes me feel good that this exhibit is reaching people deeply!
