Video Games
Something that may have been brought up before that I have noticed quite a bit recently is the sexualization of characters, specifically women, in video games. Video game creators make these avatars have defined and over exaggerated unrealistic features even when the games are targeted towards children. It is just another way for kids to grow up thinking women are objects and should be sexualized. There is no reason for these playable characters to be presented this way. I just keep seeing videos online of creators playing certain characters that are completely unrealistic and how watching these videos might affect younger people’s view on women. There are some unrealistic standards for men as well but typically it is seen for women. It just bothers me when it’s a fighting game that requires armor and the male characters are fully protected and the female characters are in a bra and underwear.
I agree with video games, one of the first games I played where I saw the sexualization of women as Saints Row it's similar to GTA but even then it made me realize one, I was way too young to be playing that game but it really invalidates women, in the game there breast are different size you can customize the size of their butt and everything about it feeds into the sexualization of women. This really makes me eager for the new GTA game coming out just to see how they will take having a female lead in the game which isn't really something they do. When it comes to the man characters there are a lot of crude and sexual jokes towards women and about themselves so I wonder what Rockstar will do with this now that the tables have turned.
ReplyDeletewhen people play games from a young age that's where it starts the unrealistic standards/ideas in women.
ReplyDeleteHello! Thank you so much for choosing this topic as your weekly blog post. I have played video games for so long and have seen this in every game. Even the most conservative ones showcase women as being property in some sort. It did not necessarily shape my view of individuals but I can see how it would do that to more impressionable minds. Thank you again.
