Timothee Chalamet comment

As someone who used to enjoy Timothée Chalamet’s older movies like Beautiful Boy, Call Me by Your Name, and Lady Bird, hearing his comments about ballet and opera was honestly disappointing. To be honest, I used to really like him because I felt like he was different and he was contributing to the real art pieces in cinema but after this and other current stuff he's been doing I can't say the same. He basically suggested that these are art forms people feel like they have to “keep alive,” like no one really cares about them anymore. Even if some people argue that the clip was taken out of context, he is still a 30 year old famous male with a huge platform who should know better than to say something like that so casually. What bothers me the most is that these female dominated art spaces already have a hard time being taken seriously. Ballet especially is often associated with femininity, beauty, and just acting graceful, which society tends to undervalue. But in reality, dancers train for years and push their bodies in extremely intense ways the most people will never understand. When a powerful male celebrity dismisses it like that, it just reinforces the idea that these spaces are less important. It makes it even harder for them to be respected as real, serious art.

Comments

  1. I just read an article regarding Chalamet's comment. Josh Groban stated it opened conversation for people to talk about opera and ballet and to support the arts. He referred to the comment as a positive accident.

  2. I understand why you are upset. It is disappointing when someone famous like Timothée Chalamet talks down about art forms that take a lot of skill and hard work. Ballet and opera are serious and require a lot of training, and his comment can make people take them less seriously, especially since many women are involved in them.

  3. I do truly think this entire scenario is being taken out of context but he still just had no reason to even say the negative comments and it just has had nothing but negative effects on himself and others

  4. This situation made me extremely upset, especially since Timothee's mom and sister were ballerinas. Regardless of what he said, I think the most upsetting part about this was his delivery. Yes, ballet and opera are not the most notable and popular arts nowadays. However, when Timothee made his comment, he came off as an egotistical and arrogant guy who thinks just because he made it big means he is above those arts.
