The Song of Achilles

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller has experienced a major resurgence thanks to TikTok, where readers share emotional reactions and favorite quotes to the popular book. Even years after its release, the novel continues to trend, showing how social media can revive literature. The story reimagines Achilles not just as a warrior, but as someone defined by love and vulnerability through his queer relationship with Patroclus. What resonates most with modern audiences is its emotional depth and tragic inevitability. In a pop culture landscape dominated by fast content, the lasting popularity of this book highlights a desire for stories that feel meaningful and human. Kind of similar to the rends we are seeing with Heartstopper, XO Kitty, and Heated Rivalry. Its revival proves that powerful storytelling can transcend time when rediscovered by new audiences.

  1. I have heard of this novel. I find that the importance within it is the very clear gay relationship between Achilles and Patroclus. Achilles is known as such a powerful and strong male figure in history, within his popular Greek story and the knowledge of the Achilles tendon. It makes his story much more powerful to know that he most likely was deeply engaged with another man romantically in history. We have heard of history where literal Greek Philosophers such as Plato commented on the relationship between them and analyzing it. It reminds society that being gay has existed very long in history and there is nothing bad about it. I love the story of Achilles and Patroclus. While it trends, it can also remind people of the history.
