Some people may have heard of Scott Pilgrim and remembered the live-action movie. Originally, it was a comic released between 2004 and 2010. It focused on the story of Scott and the people around him. He was very much a degenerate and was known to be a bad person. He breaks up with his girlfriend and turns around to date a high schooler, keeping her as a rebound or to feel happiness. He finds a girl named Ramona Flowers in his dreams and falls in love with her, leaping at every chance to date her. He needs to fight her seven evil exes to date her. I find their stories really interesting to be honest, as Ramona is also not shown as a perfect good person. A newer show was made in 2023, retelling the story and focusing more on Ramona's side of the story. Scott disappears with his future self, trying to get him away from Ramona as their future relationship has not gone well. Ramona goes back to her exes to try to make amends and acknowledge the hurt she dealt to them. One of those relationships is with her one female ex. This relationship was more of a curiosity to Ramona, and it hurt the ex she was with very badly. I like the newer show and how it deals with issues. The high schooler Scott was dating also realized he was a bad person in the end, instead of seeking to impress him and take him back. One thing to note, however, is how Ramona is deemed a "manic pixie dream girl", which is a girl designed to be happy and make the male love interest more interested in life. Most of these characters lack depth, which applies to the movie Ramona. However, with the show Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, she has more character and depth, and it fleshes out her story more. The movie was people's main introduction to the story, but the comic also went into detail about it as well. There is also a gay man named Wallace who is openly gay. One thing to also note for the movie is how Scott is called out on his bad behaviors, but no real consequences really happen. In the show, though, I do appreciate the lengths the writers went to add depth to both Ramona and Scott. It gives reason for them to be together and also helps them improve their lives and the people they hurt.
