Making It Big Without a Label

I recently saw that Spotify paid out over $11 billion in royalties in 2025, and about half of that went to independent artists. That really surprised me. It shows that you do not need a big record label to succeed in music anymore. Artists like Taylor Swift, Phoebe Bridgers, Maggie Rogers, Maisie Peters, Kacey Musgraves, and Olivia Rodrigo show that it is possible to be successful while keeping control over your music. Independent artists can make money, stay in control, and even connect with their fans more than they might with a big label. This shows that success in music is possible without a major company supporting you. One big benefit for independent artists is that they keep all of their royalties and rights to their music. Everything they create belongs to them. They also have full freedom to make the kind of music they want. No one is telling them what to sing, how to present themselves, or when to release songs. They also earn more money from streaming, merchandise, and touring. Artists like Maggie Rogers and Phoebe Bridgers have used this freedom to explore unique styles and connect closely with their fans. Taylor Swift and Kacey Musgraves also show how creative control can help artists tell their own stories and build a strong fan base. This helps artists support themselves and build a career on their own terms. Being independent is not always easy. Artists have to handle marketing, production, and distribution all by themselves. It can take longer to get noticed without a big team behind them. They also need to learn how to manage the business side while staying creative. Still, Spotify’s numbers show that independent artists can succeed if they work hard, stay creative, and connect with their fans. It is inspiring to see how the music world is changing. Artists like Olivia Rodrigo and Maisie Peters prove that you can make the music you want and still earn money. This is a reminder that passion, creativity, and hard work can help you reach your goals in music even without a label.

  1. I think its really smart of these artists to have full control of their music that way they aren't being controlled in a sense and they have full control to make their own decisions and do what they want with their career

  3. Independent artists are extremely inspiring! They are able to take complete creative liberties and achieve their goals, which is both rewarding and tiresome. Seeing so many successful independent artists is really showing of how much grit and work they tirelessly put into their craft! I'm glad that we have so many artists that are able to and choose to take this route with their art.

  4. Keeping your music your own is extremely important in the entertainment industry. Any form of art in the industry, if under a label, can be taken away almost immediately and turned into something that the artist did not originally intend for. Also, record labels if they have rights to the music can hold that over the artist's head and it can get so severe it can be used as blackmail.
