Live action Moana
In the live-action movie of Moana, fans were getting aggravated because of how her hair was replicated in the movie. Fans criticized the movie after seeing how her hair was straighter than it was in the animated films; some fans saw this as 'whitewashing' the actor rather than styling her for the part. For many Polynesian people, their hair carries a lot of identity as well as a representation of their culture. So when some watched this movie, they saw it as them softening it compared to the other movies. This controversy over the movie also shows how people react when they see how characters are changed from underrepresented communities. I feel as though when a company does something like this, they start to lose their viewers, and trust can also be broken. This issue is important because it is not just about the casting of the movie and how the hair is different, but how they kind of "erased" the culture from the movie in a way, taking out the details that matter, and how they can make the characters' culture feel real to them.
This controversy has happened so many times before and it continues to be a prevalent issue in princess movies and honestly so many other movies today. Loved your comments!
