Hulu: Love Story - John Kennedy & Carolyn Bessette

 

Love Story is about the relationship and marriage between Kennedy and Bessette. Before Kennedy and Bessette started dating, Kennedy dated actress Daryl Hannah. 

In the series, Hannah is portrayed as being obsessed with Kennedy, addicted to cocaine, and completely self-absorbed. Dissatisfied with her portrayal, Hannah wrote an opinion piece for The New York Times addressing the issue. "Popular culture has long elevated certain women by portraying others as rivals, obstacles, or villains," Hannah said. "Isn't it textbook misogyny to tear down one woman to build up another?" Hannah denies the behaviors that are shown in the series.

I have viewed the first three episodes of Love Story. Recalling the relationship with Hannah from years past, there were never any news stories indicating that Hannah was obsessed with Kennedy or using drugs. What I recall is a love story between two very prominent public figures with normal ups and downs that young couples experience. In my view, the series does Hannah an injustice by not consulting her about her relationship with Kennedy and by portraying her as a drug-crazed, obsessive, self-absorbed villain.

Airing inaccurate information is harmful, especially when the actor being portrayed negatively is still alive. The film industry should be held accountable for failing to verify the context and accuracy of a relationship before presenting potentially misleading information in a film.

A Heated Rivalry or Wicked Misogyny?

 As someone who may hold bias to the extent that I refuse to watch Heated Rivalry, I think it's important to state that I've seen a couple of episodes, and the show just isn't for me. I've also watched both the Wicked movies starring Cynthia Erivo and Arianna Grande. Now you are probably wondering what these two media films have in common. Well, nothing to be exact, and I think that's the preface we must state first.  This isn't about the series/movies, it's about the co-stars, but first, here's a little context you may need to understand where I am coming from. Arianna Grande plays in the musical adaptation of Wicked and Wicked for Good, directed by Jon M. Chu. Hi everyone, My name is Emily Webb, and I’m from Frederick, Maryland. I am a senior majoring in Digital Culture & Design with a double minor in Graphic Design and Social Media. I am currently finishing up my applications for Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) programs in Technology Education or Art Education. My goal is to become a secondary teacher for digital arts courses.
