GOAT

This week I watched the movie GOAT with some friends. We had our eyes on this for a bit as it seemed interesting for its animation and the animal world it cultivated. Seemed a little close to Zootopia, as that is the biggest animal-focused animated movie known, really. But the world it showed was very interesting and diverse in a way.

The animals are divided into classes of "bigs" and "smalls". The big animals are often predators while the smalls are prey. However, it does not go deeper into the concept of carnivores and herbivores. From this standpoint, I recommend watching Beastars as it goes deeper into that concept, but for this movie, it is interesting as it is simplified for kids and families. It has a goat named Will who aspires to be a roarball star (like basketball) and be in the big leagues. When he gets his shot, he has to prove to the people that he is good and has talent. It shows the good that opening those opportunities to more animals does.

One great thing I have to discuss is that it also focuses on the team, but also the biggest star in Roarball yet. Jett Fillmore is the most loved on the team. She is a black panther and also a woman. I loved this fact as I would have expected that role to be played by a male lead, but the fact that the biggest influence on Will is a woman is very positive. Often, men are more represented in sports, but a woman is the main star in this movie. She goes through her own arc in the movie, as she is not that open to Will, but eventually opens up. They show her in her sports team outfit, a typical rich person outfit, but also a very gender neutral outfit when she is at an event. I adore the way she is represented, as she is not treated with aggressive feminization that female animal characters often get. She presents very gender neutral, and it is never discussed. I think I loved that aspect the most about the movie.

If you saw this, what did you think?
