Flu shot recommendation for kids dropped
Last spring Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the Health and Human Services Secretary, dropped the recommendation that all children routinely get COVID shots. Last week the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), dropped six other childhood immunizations, one being an annual flu shot. This change for the flu shot is very alarming because of the timing during one of the worst flu seasons, which many pediatrician's clam that this decision was extremely irresponsible. Doctors visits for flu symptoms have reached their highest, with children being at the greatest risk for complications. According to the CDC, 288 child died from the flu. Reading this information is concerning for everyone. Now because vaccination is up to parents and healthcare providers, it is putting more people at risk, which will eventually increase the number of individuals who are effected possibly leading to more severe cases, and even death. As a public health major I know the importance of vaccinations, especially for children. What are your thoughts/ beliefs of vaccinations?

Hey Reese! I think this is an interesting topic to discuss. I've never gotten the flu shot mainly because my mom didn't believe in it. The one time I did I got the flu which I guess kind of proved her point (not really very ignorant on her part). When the COVID vaccinations came out I did get all of those shots (I've loss count 3+). Overall I think health is the most important thing that people can think about when it comes to ensuring someone stays healthy and something like modern medicine especially vaccinations is something that needs to be enforced.
ReplyDeleteI typically never get the flu shot, mainly because I forget but I always wondered if it was worth it as someone who gets the flu almost every year. Like would getting the flu shot reduce my risk of getting or or help how bad my symptoms get? My mom never "forced" me to get any vaccination shots until Covid happened and she believed it was important to get those, as did I. Health is extremely important and learning that 288 kids have died from the flu is extremely alarming.
ReplyDeleteI try to get the flu shot at least once a year when I get my physical and for me that seems to be enough. I got the COVID shot in 2021 and have been getting plenty of other vaccines recommend by health professionals. Personally, I think everyone should get vaccines as they are tested over and over by professionals who would not give us something intended to hurt or kill us rather than help. I could never imagine having children and not opting in for vaccines that would help protect not only them, but and those around them.
ReplyDeleteI think bringing up this issue is interesting! I found it pretty surprising that they dropped this recommendation seeming as though kids are so susceptible to different illnesses. As a kid, I personally think that it is important for kids to get all of their shots because of how easily illnesses spread in schools, and how weak kids immune systems can be. Also, kids are just kind of gross and many do not properly cover their sneezes and coughs when sick.
