WNBA Pay Gap

United' WNBA All-Stars wear 'Pay Us What You Owe Us' shirts - ESPN

Something that I really enjoy watching and going to is WNBA games. However, recently the players have started speaking out about the wage that they are receiving and its unfairness. The WNBA's popularity has grown rapidly within the last few years due to break out stars like Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, Paige Bueckers, and more. Despite this, the players are still only being paid a 9% revenue share, while the NBA players are receiving around 50 to 51% revenue share, which is a jaw dropping difference in payment. Everything between these two leagues is the same other than their gender, and yet the NBA is still receiving such a more significant number. The players themselves have started wearing shirts to games with the statement "pay us what you owe us" in order to help encourage an increase. This is important to recognize because of how much sexism has been rooted into all of our organizations. This is just something that companies and large corporations are getting away with, and it is really important that people are finally starting to take a stand against this.

  1. I really agree with you. The growth of the WNBA shows how much fans care, especially with stars like Caitlin Clark bringing attention to the league. The pay gap compared to the NBA is unfair, and I’m glad players are finally speaking up.

  2. This is very true, and I'm happy to see these players start advocating for themselves through apparel or social media. I think the NBA has even lost many viewers over the years because of the many controversies that have happened over the years. I think the NBA may even be corrupt, and they pay the players so much because people with power and in influential seats can pay players hush money to make themselves a profit. There have been some recent scandals of this, but I feel like the whole thing was just like a temporary distraction for the other issues persisting in society, and I think it just got pushed under the rug. Meanwhile, women in the WNBA have been advocating for years regarding equality in pay, representation, and opportunities.
