Unknown Number: The High School Catfish

I recently watched a movie called Unknown Number. It was about a girl in high school who was in a relationship, and she and her boyfriend were constantly getting texted from an unknown number and being bullied. They would say things that nobody but their closest friends would have known, and it was going on for over a year. In the beginning of the movie, they were just really telling us about the different things that Unknown Number would say. The number would text the girl things like "go kill yourself" and then talk about some of her most secret insecurities. Then they would text the boyfriend and say how the girl wouldn’t be able to make him happy the way he needs. Mind you, at the time everything is going on, these kids are 13 and 14 years old. After going through over a year and a half of these unknown numbers texting these two high schoolers, and them talking about how this situation basically ruined their lives in a sense, the police found out it was the girl's mother on the unknown number. Even when she was confronted by the police and her husband (who knew nothing about it), she just cried like it was a strange addiction of hers or something. I wanted to use this as a blog post because cyberbullying has been coming up more often. However, I have never heard of someone's own MOTHER being their cyberbully. This was a very good documentary, especially in the pop culture view.

  1. It is really scary that parents participate in bullying. A few years ago there was an incident in Texas where the mother of a cheerleader wanted another cheerleading team member killed so her daughter could get the primary spot on the team. The mom was arrested and convicted for attempting to hire a hitman to do the killing. Another parental cyberbullying was done to a middle school student. Megan Taylor Meier committed suicide by hanging herself just shy of her 14th birthday. After an investigation, it was determined that her friend and classmates mother, Lori Drew, was found guilty of cyberbullying her through the MySpace website. Lori Drew was also her neighbor .

    1. I watched the documentary last night. I couldn't understand how a mother could cause so much harm to her daughter, family, friends, and her daughters classmates. At the beginning of the documentary and throughout the interviewer and others talking with the mom, I would never have suspected her of her actions. When it was revealed who it was, I think some of her responses to the interviewer and others who spoke to her, you could almost determine that there were mental health issues that she was experiencing. Such a sad story.

  3. Wowww, I’ve never watched Unknown Number but I heard about it recently and it sounds so intense! I can’t imagine being bullied by someone you’re supposed to trust, especially your own parent it really shows how serious cyberbullying can be and how screwed up some people are.
