To the Bone (2017)
To the Bone released in 2017. The storyline follows twenty year old Ellen, a college drop out, who struggles with severe anorexia, joining a non traditional group recovery home, due to her distant family. The film portrays the harsh realities of anorexia well. Some topics the film highlights is focusing on hiding food, counting calories, and the physical effects of anorexia. While this is a huge step towards representation of eating disorders and the struggles individuals people face, many people critiqued the film due to potentially glamorizing unhealthily thin as beautiful. While I do see this view point, I also believe it portrays the underlying causes of eating disorders, having the narrative be more focused that food is a coping mechanism to trauma, not just having food as the problem itself. This is the only movie I have heard getting a lot of media attention. Drop names or shows in the comments of movies or shows that portray eating disorders well or bad.
I see little snippets of this on TikTok, and I have always wanted to watch it because it just seems so interesting to me. I also feel as though 13 reasons why could be a show that portrays ED's
