Stranger Things
Something I really appreciated recently is the LGBTQ representation they have included within the show Stranger Things on Netflix. Though they did play a little into the more stereotypes with the recent coming out scene of Will, I still feel the fact that it was included is very impactful. Robin Hawke, the actress who plays Robin in the show, recently said something in an interview that I really agreed and resonated with. She talked about how everyone watches stranger things and she said "your homophobic uncle Rick can't avoid stranger things the way he avoids everything else", and I feel like that really encapsulates the importance of representation. Stranger Things is a show that has grown so widely popular and has such a diverse audience that she's right, people can't avoid it, and it's really important that they are being exposed to it.
I love Robin!!! I had never seen Stranger Things, so I watched the entirety of it over winter break. Good show.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen Stranger Things in full, I haven't even gotten that far into the show, but I do want to try getting through it from all of the interesting things I have seen! I know it is extremely popular, which helps propel the things it says or the representation!
ReplyDeleteLove this take on how impactful an extremely popular show can be just by bringing light to these specific characters that don't see a lot of representation. It brings people closer to normalizing what should already be normal.
ReplyDeleteI agree! I didn't love the hate and jokes that were made about wills coming out speech because I do think that it is undermining the reason we needed to see it. It was a hard talk, and in my experience with friends coming out, its a tough convo. It takes a while and is hard and I just think that the duration of the scene was important.
