“Sorry, Baby” (2025)
(Content Warnings: Mentions of Sexual Assault)
Written, directed, and starring actress Eva Victor, with their directorial debut, Sorry, Baby is genuinely one of the best films I’ve watched from 2025. Following the protagonist, Agnes, the narrative navigates her life before and after her sexual assault and how she learns to rebuild her relationships on a platonic and romantic level, additionally her finding her footing again with the world around her. Victor’s writing and acting is nothing but exceptionally amazing. Even from the ensemble and supporting cast helps to support the narrative as well. Naomi Ackie’s character, Lydie, Agnes’s best friend isn’t sidelined or given the “black best friend treatment” but actually feels like a truly fleshed out character as she not only has her own life, but is a good friend and supporter of Agnes throughout the narrative. The subject of the sexual assault is treated with respect, but something that is noticeable is the language that’s around the subject of sexual assault in terms of what happened to Agnes and for victims in general. From within the academic setting, social circles, as well as how the language is used judicially. I don’t want to spoil too much since I think it’s an important watch, but it really is an incredible movie that was snubbed to hell by the Academy Awards.
I hadn't previously heard of this film until now, but it sounds truly remarkable, I will be checking it out as soon as I have time. I feel we don't have enough films that shed light on the complexity of life before and after sexual assault, so to have a film that handles it gracefully is so important. Also, to speak on your final comment I believe that a lot of the most impactful films end up being snubbed by the academy awards, and it is truly unfair to films that handle topics such as this one in such an impactful way. Thank you for sharing!
