Bad Bunny and Super Bowl Backlash

This year Bad Bunny is scheduled to preform for the Super Bowl halftime show. He has received arguably the most backlash an artist could receive since announcing the show in 2025. Bad Bunny has received an incredible amount of backlash that even the president has stated he will not be going to this years Super Bowl after being to past games during his presidency. In addition to this, Charlie Kirk's foundation TurningPoint USA has decided they are going to put on their own alternate show at the same time as Bad Bunny to try to deter viewers. The arguments posed for the backlash Bad Bunny and the NFL are facing is the lack of English words in his songs as he is a Spanish speaking musician from Puerto Rico.  Bad Bunny is one of the biggest names in music in recent years, a week before his Super Bowl performance, he took home the "Album of the Year" Grammy for his new album DeBí Tirar MáS FOToS. Despite his immense success, he is still facing backlash for "not being American" and not singing in English. The people throwing backlash at Bad Bunny for not being American (despite Puerto Rico being a USA territory), are the same people who, for example, praised Rihanna's halftime show years ago even though she is from Barbados. Two incredibly decorated artists, both who have received completely different reactions for their Super Bowl performances.

  1. I am not an avid listener of Bad Bunny, but the things surrounding him really just show the obvious racism in society. With PR being a USA territory, people still assume its not America as its not a state or they speak mainly Spanish. I truly hope we can overcome the racism growing in the country, and also I really just appreciate him speaking out against ICE in general. We should celebrate the people who deserve it, and from what I have heard he deserves the praise and not backlash.

  2. Yes! Absolutely Yes! There have been other halftime performances over the years that feature performers outside of the U.S. that include people such as Rihanna, and additionally performers who are from Canada and the U.K. All of its rooted back to racism as we see people getting to pick and choose who gets to be America or celebrating and placing more emphasis on figures who may look more America. It's honestly disgusting and the people that live under a rock and keep saying racism doesn't exist are blind and ignorant.

  3. I have not heard many of his songs, but I am excited to watch the halftime performance. It is horrible how much hate he has gotten.

  4. Im actually responding to this after watching the halftime performance and I can say I was surprised and proven wrong about him. I don't listen to Bad Bunny but I can say the performance was entertaining even though I didn't undertsand what he was saying. The Turning Point USA halftime show was amazing too.

  6. I went to a bar last night for the game, and I too was seeing the media backlash leading up to the superbowl but I didn't know turning point USA was holding something at the same time which isn't ironic at all.. I personally am fond of Bad Bunny's music, and I though his performance was illuminating. Anyway, there were like 5 people including myself in the whole bar who were physically enjoying the show, but a majority of people around were very skeptical. I overheard a lot of racial strays toward the performance; there were also sexist perceptions of Coco Jones, Lady Gaga, and Brandi Carlile who sang before Charlie Puth. I thought the people who performed last night did great, and I really can't express my frustration in words pertaining to this matter. I thought it was better than last years superbowl.

  7. I’ve had never listened to bad bunny before the Super Bowl yesterday, but after watching his halftime show I would say the music wasn’t the best but the performance itself was one of the better ones I have watched.
