The Pink Lens
In the movie Barbie, released in the summer of 2023, it depicts a world full of bright pink colors, which at first seems appealing, especially to young girls and women. But the movie shows that this pink world also represents pressure on women to look perfect, act happy, and follow strict rules about how they "should" behave. Barbie is beautiful, confident, and popular, yet she still faces limitations on what she can do and who she can be. The movie uses humor and exaggeration to make these rules seem oblivious or unrecognizable, illustrating how unfair and impossible they can feel. By making the pink world so extravagant, the movie helps viewers to see how society often teaches young girls and women to be a certain kind of feminine while still making it look fun and the new norm. The pink isn't just a decoration, it's a way to show both the appeal and the limits of being a woman in today's generation. The thumbnail of the movie even includes the words "She's everything. He's just Ken," showcasing double standards in how men and women are judged and the way advertising and movies often sell the idea of "perfect" womanhood while ignoring the pressures and struggles behind it.

Barbie has been one of my favorite movies produced over the past couple of years. The message was beautifully woven in and powerful. I especially think this is a great way for younger generations to learn and be exposed to the unrealistic standards girls and women are held to.
ReplyDeleteI think your point is beautifully articulated! The Barbie movie as a whole really articulates some of those harsh stereotypes forced onto females in a perfect way that allows the deeper meaning of the movie to perfectly weave into the story.
ReplyDeleteI agree! I loved this movie! I've seen it maybe six times now and it never gets old, especially the monologue scene. Its relatable and fun, but most importantly, it teaches an insanely important lesson and I hope everyone watches this movie at least once in their lives. Great Job :)
ReplyDeleteI loved the Barbie movie when it came out, it is one of the few movies I find myself wanting to rewatch. I just saw a video earlier today about how the speech America Ferrera gave in the movie did not win any awards meanwhile Ryan Gosling won an Oscar for 'I'm Just Ken'. This quite literally shows the double standard men have over women in the real world as that song was about how the Kens are just Ken.
ReplyDeleteI really agree with this point! I think this movie did a beautiful job at highlighting the struggles women go through, and all of the pressures that are put on them.
