Tell Me Lies

My current pop culture obsession right now is the drama series Tell Me Lies. It features a toxic, emotionally intense relationship between two college students, Lucy Albright and Stephen DeMarco. On the outside it looks like a complicated and messy college relationship, but the show is really about power, manipulation, and insecurity. Stephen represents a common kind of male toxicity in which manipulation and control are normalized and excused, giving him patriarchy in the relationship. Lucy's harmful behavior comes from emotional dependence and a need for male validation, which eventually leads her to hurt herself and other women instead of confronting the source of the harm, Stephen. Even though both of them act in self destructive ways, their toxicity is not equal. Stephen's behavior controls, while Lucy's behavior is a survival response. The show shows how "choice" and consent can be distorted by emotional pressure and power, explaining why people stay in relationships that slowly break each other down.

  1. Thank you for sharing. The series sounds rather interesting especially identifying emotional pressure and other behaviors that may make people stay in unhealthy relationships.

  2. I have just started the new season but going through the old seasons make me realize how much of the show is toxic and how the characters are toxic towards each others and their friends/ relationships.
