Stop the Genocide NFL Controversy

This season during the Wild Card round of the NFL playoffs, One of the running backs on the Houston Texans, Azeez Al-Shaair was wearing eye black on his face where he wrote "Stop the genocide" over it. This has caused some controversy around the league as Al-Shaair was fined about $11,593 for the incident. The NFL described it as "violating NFL uniform and equipment rules by wearing eye black that contained a personal message." For the last few seasons, the NFL has had various phrases on the end zones of each field as well as the back of players helmets that range from "Stop Hate", "Choose Love", "End Racism", "Inspire Change", and "It Takes All of Us". Having these messages on the field yet punishing a player for writing a message on his eyeblack is giving the idea that the NFL only has these messages to strengthen their image. The NFL has made billions of dollars from the press surrounding these messages on the field but suddenly when a player stands up for what he believes in, the league draws a line. The NFL has engineered their own double standard where their main goal is to bring more money into the league.

  1. Personally I am not a football fan but I think this is very interesting. Like you said the double standard that is placed is unfair, and hypocritical. In my opinion it seems the NFL "supports" these other messages you have stated almost as a money scheme because you also wrote that "the NFL has made billions of dollars from the press surrounding these messages". So it makes me think if the NFL really supports these messages or if they see it as a source of income. Hopefully Al-Shaair speaks up against the NFL, and less hypocritical fines are placed on players.

  2. The NFL’s fine system is terrible and has always been terrible. They need to figure out some way to fix it.
