Mariah the Scientist & Young Thug proposal

One of my recent pop culture embarrassments is Young Thug's proposal to Mariah the Scientist. In my opinion, after Thug's jail calls got leaked about him cheating on Mariah, she should have cut him out of her life. But focusing on the actual act of his proposal, everything seemed forced. Thug proposed at one of Mariah's concerts in front of thousands of fans. This might have put social pressure on Mariah to accept, making this action very manipulative and controlling. Now, since the proposal was very public, many videos surfaced on the internet of what had happened. When watching the video, Mariah appears confused and unenthusiastic; her body language reflects this. She stands far away from him when he gets down on one knee, so far, Thug pulls her closer; there was no initial excitement, as you expect when someone is being proposed to. Overall, across social media, there has been backlash about this. I hope Mariah finds the peace she deserves away from Thug

  1. I agree, Reese. To be fair, when we look at this culture of women doing a lot for their man who don't respect them enough to even follow suit with loyalty, it really spreads the narrative that women will always be walked over. I also think this is just another tactic of men doing things in public because they won't face much backlash from it (similar to the Cardi B and Offset engagement proposal). There wasn't a romantic element in this video, and also imagine how many people online would've completely dragged her if she declined his proposal in front of thousands. Either way this was a no win situation, she accepted it and is dragged online for being a "bird" but if she wouldve declined it she would be labeled "rude for embarresing him when she could've accepted it and just said no in a private setting" seems like the pattern is that no matter which way plays out the objective is always going to hate women.

  2. I definitely agree with your take. I think public proposals (unless agreed upon) are forced and it builds this weird pressure to accept it. I do agree it feels like a manipulation tactic where he could just walk all over her and not be shamed for it. I do think in her case there is no positive outcome from the proposal. If she had declined she would have gotten backlash for declining a public proposal, yet even when she accepted it, comments were made about how far away she stood, how awkward she acts, etc.

  3. I couldn't have said it better myself. I have personally seen Mariah repost things about thug being unfaithful to her while he was incarcerated. So for me to know after everything he put her through she still accepted the proposal. I believe that the pressure from everyone being there and unfortunately her immense love for this man that made her say yes.

  4. I 100% agree with what you said. As a Mariah the Scientist fan your blog immediately caught my attention. Its so hard to support her as an artist when this is the kind of situation she puts up with, but on the other hand I want to support her because I also feel bad about her situation. I think that it was very selfish and controlling of Young Thug to propose to her in that way as if he wanted the attention on him. The circumstances almost forces her to say yes to him. I really hate that she feels like she has to stay with him and she thinks that their relationship is what true love is when it may be the complete opposite.

  5. I totally agree. I watched the video and felt a sense of second hand pressure. Manipulative was a perfect way to describe it because (obviously it's still an option) was she really going to say no in front of thousands of people? It seems like a trap, especially since he has messed up so bad in the past.

  6. This is highly embarrassing being one of her supporters. You had said everything perfectly, but I also understand Mariah's point of view where she may be staying with him until it gets to the point of hating him because it tends to be an easier way to let a man go.
