"Like a Boy"

Something in pop culture that I have loved for years now is the 2022 Louisiana State University's Dance Team's hip hop routine, which was titled "Like a Boy". The dance originated because the team was denied the ability to compete in the 2021 dance team national championship due to lots of different reasons, that always somehow seemed to be changing, such as funding or lingering effects from covid. However, the team noticed that many other teams were still allowed to go to their respective competitions, all of which were male. This sparked outrage in the girls, which led to the hashtag #LetThemCompete, and later the dance itself. The dance was used as a way to prove to everyone that women athletes hold just as much value as male, and should be given fair opportunities and treatment. The dance blew up on social media, and not only received so much support, but also began to encourage others to stand up for themselves. This dance is fresh on my mind because I am currently in Orlando this weekend to watch the national championships that this team was once not allowed to attend, except this year I am going to watch them crush it and prove to everyone once again that they are just as strong and capable as any athlete.

Here's a link to the dance if you're interested in watching!

  3. I am obsessed with watching all of the UDA college national championship each year! My best friend is a dancer so we love to talk about all the dances afterwards. LSU dance this year was 100% in our top 5

  4. I can’t believe LSU got 2nd in hip hop this year :(((( The fact that they did a throwback to the iconic move from the "Like a Boy" choreography in this year’s hip hop dance made it even more special. It felt like such a powerful nod to their history and everything they stood for back then!

  5. I LOVED watching them dance, and they got so robbed this year. But I love every single one of their dances and how they tell a story every time.

  6. I absolutely love watching the UDA competition and look forward to watching it every year, I felt like the scoring absolutely did not reflect the dances this year (LSU was robbed) but I still enjoyed watching as always! I hope you had a good time watching it in person, I bet it was exciting!

  7. I am so glad you brought some light to this issue. I think as a society people really undermine dancers and the true athleticism it takes to be a dancer. Especially at how much time and effort LSU puts into all of their dances I find it insane that this whole situation even happened. Also, I'm insanely jealous that you got to see them in person.
