I'm choosing to focus on the Jimmy Kimmel situation
from a few months back. This situation was an emotional roller coaster. It all
happened in late 2025 when ABC suspended Kimmel for just about a week. He was
suspended after he made some controversial jokes following the death of the
political figure Charlie Kirk. There was outrage, including some TV stations
that refused to air his show after his suspension ended. This also resulted in
a boiling point in his feud with President Donald Trump. Trump kept calling for
Kimmel to be fired, and Kimmel responded with "I'll go when you go."
In the more recent months things have begun to calm down, and Kimmel signed a
contract extension through May 2027. Many speculate this will be his final run
and he will then retire from late night TV. The reason I wanted to talk about
this is because of how much I despise cancel culture. While yes Jimmy Kimmel
should not have made jokes about someone's death, this cancel culture gets
thrown around way too much. Our country is based on the right of free speech.

I liked when other comedians/ celebrities stood up for him instead of fearing their shows get canceled also.
ReplyDeleteI agree! I think a situation like this is crazy since one of the foundations of our country is free speech. Like you mentioned, maybe some comments such as those sensitive to an assassination, may be a bit much for TV, but there are so many people and other shows that talk about topics that have not gotten pulled from air.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed seeing a huge crowd of people including celebrities stand up for Jimmy Kimmel when the situation happened. The situation was crazy as it was truly something I have never seen before and the start of content being censored from the public.
ReplyDeleteI think this situation shows how much politics are involved with what’s shown on tv (especially now). It showed how much censorship can affect everything we do. What makes the situation more crazier is that Kimmel never even said Kirk’s name and he was suspended.
