Adolescence
One of my recent pop culture obsessions is Adolescence, a limited series on Netflix. Adolescence dives into the mind of a young teenage boy, Jamie, who became a victim of social media and then turned to violence. Cyberbullying was incredibly normalized in his school and there was a complete lack of mental help. The things he did are not excusable, but they could have been prevented had there been mental health recourses and online supervision/ monitoring. This series shows how growing up being exposed to social media can shape actions and how teenage boys are expected to be violent. Jamie's family was ordinary, and he still turned into a misogynist and murderer. He thought a girl should go out with him just because he asked. It is so interesting to see Jamie's point of view, and the style of filming makes you like his character even though he was at fault. I think this show is an incredible watch and I highly recommend it.
Hey Brogan! I've never seen this show, but it seems interesting. We often see the negative effects of social media, as it sets unrealistic expectations in the real world. Like you mentioned,d the character Jamie thought that he was owed a date because he asked for it, really sets up a token system where just because you ask something doesn't mean you deserve to sustain that request. I really think it's important that these presentations are relevant in the media because technology, social media, etc., is a very concerning thing in this day and age, and along with the character being perceived as the "good guy," it shows how blinding and dangerous that really is.
ReplyDeleteThis show is definitely on my watch list not only because of the strong performances led by Owen Cooper, but because of the strong messaging behind it. It’s a show that pushes the envelope an really asks the questions I think we’re the most afraid to ask.
ReplyDeleteHi Brogan! I finished this series in one night. I was OBSESSED. Owen Cooper, not only won an Emmy Award this year, but he does an amazing job showing how manipulating people can be, no matter how old you are.
ReplyDeleteSUCH A GOOD SHOW! All the awards are incredibly deserved and I thought all the statements the show made through the plot were incredible.
